Florida Broadleaf Mustard seed from Sakata South Africa

Florida Broadleaf is a commercial seed variety in the Mustard crop group. The supplier classifies this product as OP. Available pack options shown on this product are taken from the Sakata Seed Southern Africa price list effective 1 April 2026. The listed options for this variety are 100 grams, 500 grams, 1 kilogram, Bulk pack. Select the required pack size before adding the product to your basket.

Understanding the seed type

This variety is listed as open pollinated, abbreviated as OP. Open-pollinated seed can remain comparatively stable when seed production is correctly isolated and managed, although field performance still depends on the production environment and seed handling. Growers planning to save seed should obtain suitable technical guidance on isolation, selection, disease control and varietal purity.

Pack sizes and pricing

Seed-count packs use the supplier’s “mille” convention. On GroSpace, 0.5m is displayed as 500 seeds, 1m as 1,000 seeds, 5m as 5,000 seeds, 7.5m as 7,500 seeds and 10m as 10,000 seeds. Larger seed-count options follow the same convention, so 25m means 25,000 seeds, 50m means 50,000 seeds and 100m means 100,000 seeds. Weight-based options are displayed in grams or kilograms exactly as indicated in the source list. A bulk option is identified as a bulk pack and should be confirmed with the seller if exact packaging detail is important to the buyer.

Prices displayed on GroSpace exclude VAT. VAT and any applicable delivery charges are handled separately by the checkout. Sakata South Africa products have a combined minimum shop order of R2,000 before VAT. Buyers may combine different Sakata products and varieties to reach this minimum.

Choosing an appropriate pack

Select a pack by working backwards from the intended planted area, target plant population, expected establishment rate and a sensible allowance for operational losses. The number of seeds purchased is not the same as the final number of marketable plants. Germination, emergence, transplant establishment, field losses, thinning, pest pressure and environmental conditions all influence the final stand. Commercial buyers should confirm their population calculations with an agronomist, seed representative or experienced crop adviser before placing a high-value order.

Consider whether the crop will be direct seeded or raised as transplants. Direct-seeded systems may require an allowance for field emergence and thinning, while nursery systems require planning for tray size, growing-media capacity, expected transplant losses and the number of replacement seedlings. Keep a written calculation showing the planned hectares or beds, row spacing, in-row spacing, plant population and contingency percentage. This makes it easier to select among the available pack sizes and reduces the risk of expensive shortages or unnecessary surplus.

Production planning before ordering

Confirm that the variety, crop type and production window suit the intended market and local growing area. Review seasonal temperatures, frost risk, rainfall pattern, irrigation reliability, soil condition and known pest or disease pressure. Variety descriptions such as early, medium, determinate, indeterminate, blocky, round, coloured or specialty refer to supplier groupings; they do not replace a local production plan. Where timing or market specifications are critical, request current technical information from Sakata South Africa before planting.

Prepare a realistic budget that includes seed, growing medium, trays where applicable, land preparation, fertiliser, crop protection, irrigation, labour, grading, packaging, cooling, transport and marketing. The seed price is only one part of the crop’s total cost. Buyers growing against a supply agreement should also confirm required variety, quality grade, residue limits, packing format, delivery schedule and rejection criteria with the intended customer before committing land and inputs.

Sowing and establishment

Use clean equipment and a well-prepared seedbed or suitable seedling medium. Follow crop-specific recommendations for sowing depth, spacing, temperature, moisture and transplant age. Avoid treating general internet guidance as a substitute for current technical advice because requirements differ substantially between crops and production regions. Overwatering can reduce oxygen around germinating seed, while drying during germination can damage establishment. Aim for even moisture and monitor the crop frequently rather than relying on a fixed watering routine.

Label trays, beds or field blocks with the variety, lot information, sowing date and pack reference. Good records help the grower compare establishment, identify handling errors and maintain traceability. Keep different varieties and seed lots clearly separated. When seedlings are raised for transplanting, harden them gradually and reduce avoidable stress during movement to the field. Transplant into prepared soil and provide prompt irrigation where required.

Soil fertility, irrigation and crop care

Base soil preparation and fertiliser decisions on a representative soil analysis and the needs of the specific crop. Excess or deficient nutrients can reduce crop performance, and the correct programme varies with soil type, water quality, production system and yield target. Use irrigation water efficiently and check distribution uniformity. Uneven irrigation can create variable growth even when the seed lot is uniform. Inspect emitters, filters, pressure and wetting patterns as part of routine crop management.

Begin weed control early because weeds compete for light, water, nutrients and space. Combine suitable cultural, mechanical and, where lawful and appropriate, chemical methods. Monitor insects, diseases and physiological disorders regularly. Correct identification is essential before choosing a control measure. Always follow registered product labels, withholding periods, worker-safety requirements and local regulations. Seek advice from a qualified crop adviser when symptoms are uncertain.

Harvest and market preparation

Plan labour, containers, packing materials, cooling and transport before the crop reaches maturity. Harvest timing and quality criteria differ by crop, variety and buyer. Avoid assuming that a general maturity estimate guarantees a particular harvest date; temperature, planting date and crop stress can accelerate or delay development. Record planting and harvest information so that future seed orders can be based on actual farm performance rather than estimates alone.

Seed storage and handling

Keep unopened seed in its original labelled packaging until required. Store it in a clean, dry, cool and secure area away from direct sunlight, moisture, fertiliser, pesticides and rodents. Do not leave seed in a hot vehicle or exposed field store. Once a pack is opened, protect the remaining seed from humidity and contamination, retain all labels and record the quantity used. Storage life varies, and GroSpace does not recommend carrying seed over without confirming appropriate conditions and viability.

Order checks and conditions

Before checkout, verify the crop, variety, seed type, pack size, quantity, price, delivery destination and the R2,000 Sakata shop minimum. Product availability can change, and an order may require supplier confirmation. Photographs are category illustrations unless a variety-specific image is expressly identified. Packaging appearance can change without altering the named variety or pack quantity.

The supplier’s conditions state that descriptions do not create an express or implied warranty and that neither seller nor producer accepts responsibility for crop failure or consequential loss arising from factors outside the seed supply. Buyers should inspect deliveries promptly and report suspected delivery errors immediately. Keep the original packaging, labels, lot information and proof of purchase if raising a query. Nothing in this description limits rights that cannot lawfully be excluded under applicable South African consumer law.
